When the flag fell no one was keen to go on but Seymour reluctantly set the pace closely followed by Ne Holland. This order was maintained until Perkin Warbeck made a bid for glory approaching the hill, a lead he kept until the field reached the Red House whereupon Balfe, Rabagas II and Craigmillar made their efforts. From 2 out it was clear that Craigmillar was going easily and readily won by 3 lengths in 3 minutes 20 seconds, with half a length between Balfe and Earl of Dartrey. Craigmillar won the Buckenham Stakes at Newmarket and the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood as a 2 year old, while later in his career he was defeated by Apology in the 1876 Ascot Gold Cup before winning the Doncaster Cup in the same year.
